JOB TITLE: Senior RF Design Engineer    

REPORTING TO:  Engineering Team Leader

LOCATION: Newton Aycliffe

PURPOSE OF ROLE: Is responsible for the design, development, implementation and also the evaluation and introduction into manufacture of products.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To deliver fully verified and documented designs in line with project defined technical, schedule and cost constraints
  • To effectively and comprehensively document designs and design decisions in a format which stands up to scrutiny by internal peers, customers and external auditors alike.
  • Ensuring that designs meet the system & volume manufacturability requirements - including a tolerance analysis in accordance with design handbook requirements and due consideration of design for manufacture principles.
  • Preparing and reviewing tollgate documentation, ensuring the standard according to the NPI procedure is achieved and that reports are progressed and updated throughout the project.
  • To pro-actively participate in design reviews and to initiate design reviews in order to mitigate risk when appropriate.
  • To meet departmental objectives as allocated by Team Leader
  • To regularly and clearly report status and progress against assigned workpackages – including due consideration of technical, cost and timescale requirements
  • To pro-actively seek out and mitigate technical and project risk

To effectively interface with operations, projects, quality and sales in order to meet project objectives

JOB CONTENT:

  • RF ,Microwave and mmWave electrical design and development
  • The compilation and checking of design documentation, example design logbooks, data packs, peer review etc. in preparation for design release and production
  • Supporting the New Product Introduction for assigned projects.
  • Problem solving and fault diagnosis of manufactured products during product introduction.
  • To pro-actively participate in design reviews and liase regularly and effectively with other departments to communicate status / risks.
  • To undertake all aspects of design verification and validation including preparation of test specifications, test reports and reliability testing / evaluation.
  • To maintain an up to date, comprehensive design compliance matrix, referencing robust evidence of compliance data for assigned designs.
  • To pro-actively maintain an awareness of the design activities being undertaken by peers on assigned projects, so that “design interface issues” are resolved real-time.

HEALTH & SAFETY

  • To ensure safe working practices are observed and the Health and Safety Policy is adhered to at all times.
  • To ensure protective clothing and eye protection are used when necessary.
  • To maintain a high standard of housekeeping at all times.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrable general microwave design experience
Experience in design and development of mmWave components up to 86GHz .
Experience in design of Transmitter and Receiver circuits from RF to Baseband
Experience in design of Synthesisers for low phase noise Local Oscillators
Understanding of digital communication system modulation techniques, and link budgets.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

Able to understand product specifications and translate into product designs.

Ability to simulate and analyse RF/microwave line-ups and elements

Excellent measurement skills using microwave test equipment

Able to generate technical reports

Experience with one or more of the following beneficial:
Microwave Office, ADS, VSS, AutoCAD, HFSS (or similar 3D EM simulation tools).

Knowledge and experience of design for high volume manufacture

Knowledge of manufacturing processes and supplier processes beneficial

PERSONAL QUALITIES

Ability to work un-supervised in a high pressure environment, on multiple projects using effective time management / action planning methods / processes

Team-player, keeping abreast of all activities / risks within the team, so that the team’s risks are effectively managed

“Can-do” attitude

Excellent attention to detail and effective approach to risk management to ensure “right first time” designs

Excellent communicator – written and verbal, with ability to summarise status / risks no non-engineers

Customer focussed – with ability to prioritise needs of customers (internal and external)
 

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
BEng (Hons) or equivalent
MEng / PhD preferred
